The YWCA began in England in 1855 as a movement to make life better for women. This movement included an emphasis on the overall improvement of the human condition and a vision to promote peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all people.
Since 1918, The YWCA of Annapolis and Anne Arundel County has been impacting the lives and experiences of women and children in our community through an ever-evolving array of services. Whether it is social, educational, emotional or recreational, the YWCA provides programming that best meets the many facets that make a woman whole.
The YWCA of Annapolis and Anne Arundel County is proud to be one of only 78 non-profit organizations in the state of Maryland to have achieved the Standards for Excellence Award. This is an award presented by the Maryland Association of Nonprofit Organizations to those organizations who have successfully completed the voluntary peer review process known as The Standards for Excellence.
The process sets high standards and reviews applicant organizations’ ethical operations in the areas of program operations, governance, human resources, financial management and fundraising practices. The Standards for Excellence serves as a model of how well managed and responsibly governed nonprofit organizations operate. The YWCA received its recertification in 2009.
